[Y140.01] - Falling into a job

“You’re late,” the woman snapped the moment Lucas got introduced to her by her colleague, who’d led him from the hotel’s front desk into the back quarters. She quickly took off again, leaving him with the annoyed looking woman.

“I’m… sorry?” he started hesitantly. This wasn’t exactly going according to plan - not that he had had one to begin with. “I’m Lucas Fly…”

“I don’t wanna know, I don’t have time for this,” the woman interrupted him, “Please fill in these forms. Jackson will hand you a uniform and show you where you can change. He’ll tell you where to start. Next time, you better be here fifteen minutes before your shift starts.”

Lucas mechanically accepted the papers he was given and glanced down at them to read them diagonally. It seemed to be some standardized contract one had to complete with their contact details and then sign to be able to start working.

“What are you still standing there,” the woman sounded irritated, glaring at him.

“I’m…” Lucas held up the papers, “I was under the impression I would have a job interview?”

“Well,” she looked him up and down, “consider yourself hired.” She gestured at the papers he was holding. “Sign those and you get to start right away. Ain’t that a plus?”

Her phone started ringing and she grabbed it, her face visibly dropping when she checked the number on caller ID before answering it. “Miss Bennett, how can I be of service today?” A pause. “I do realize we are left short-staffed, Miss Bennett, but there was no way we cou…” She got cut short.

Realizing he was still standing there, she frowned and waved him off, almost pushing him out the door and closing it behind him.

That was one way to fall into a job.
